Default NotInKokomo.Com to become all-registered site

Folks, after a lot of frustration and many, many suggestions our website will become registered-only for posters effective Sunday, September 5.

We have upheld the banner of free, non-registered posting for nearly five years... taking a lot of criticism all along the way for standing by our beliefs.

A lot has changed in five years. We have fought many battles together and have actually won a few.

Time, now, is different. It's time to stand up and speak with the loudest voice you can so that everyone can hear. Your voice can only count if... at the very least... people can know you by your NotInKokomo.Com moniker.

In addition to this change, we have instituted new policies which will allow you to sign up for our website WITHOUT confirming an email address. On the new sign-up screen, you instead will be asked one of several random questions that (if you're from Indiana and not a spammer from elsewhere) you can easily answer. We will carefully monitor new user registrations going forward.

We continue to respect your right to privacy... which means our policy of deleting all web logs and user IP addresses within 24 hours will remain in place.

We have always also deleted registered user emails within our files whenever someone requests us to do so... and that will continue on as well.

Thank you all for your support these many years. We look forward to continuing our tradition of supporting public dialog on issues that concern Kokomo and Howard County.

We also look forward to those of you who have posted as Unregistered Guests joining our online community and continuing to provide your great commentary.

    NIK

Why now has this thread gone silent? Isn't this a good thing? Will this bring the election candidates and other members of the elected forth ? Will this give us a sense of truth when a post is read ? Will it bring more civility to NIK ?
Will this cause site visits to decrease? I have nothing but good hopes and faith that people of good intentions will join in with community building spirit.

I am glad, too many people were taking advantage of it and hiding behind being a guest. Guess they ruined that!

I hope I'm wrong, but as before when you tried to make registration mandatory it failed and the forum died back to nothing. It will happen again.

Keep a small area for unregistered visitors with limited topics and have the registered members stay out of it stirring up the crap. Lately a lot of the problems have been caused by three registered members posting in the Free for all which was set up for unregistered membersThey get in there, bump their gums and cry foul when the get it put back on them. They have several areas to post in the registered section, but they choose to post in the Free for all.

Its a injustice for LE, FD and government employees who wish to express themselves also!

I don't believe for one second that the nasty stuff is posted by cops, deputies or firemen. They are all much better than that.

Bad news Grumpy, I have caught both departments (HCSD and KPD) using their phones, personal laptops, etc while on duty to play games on here. I knew one KPD officer who was using the wireless connection at a deputy's house to attack NIK. Why? The KPD officer JL ran for office and got a few lumps on here, took it personal and attacked everyone.

The owner of the wireless password word protected it and gave it out for a select few to use, who still abuse it. Don't be fooled, I have had a badge for many years and sometimes I trust the criminals on the street more than I do certain fellow officers.

My point. As election time approaches police and firemen post more because it affects them directly. Example, I'm using a friends wireless tonight because Marty has threatened he will not tolerate employees posting on NIK. I have no problems with Marty, but he can be really strange when he gets mad.

Simple solution. Registered members stay in the upper section to elevate the attacks. Leave one small area for the unregistered with restrictions as to content. I personally like to know a members name when I choose to have a conversation, however a lot of good insight and info has come from the unregistered posters over the years. Nothing will totally stop the attacks, I can change my IP, if I choose to do so every 60 seconds.

Its a case of live and let live.
