    Default How right you are...

ever take a close look at the majority of the shoppers at Walmart. Im not sure this is the badge of honor that you are making it out to be. And maybe being referred to as mayberry aint so bad, low crime (no homicides or drive bys) and no real drug issues. Hmmm maybe ole mayberry aint so bad after all....And if they want to shop or eat out Kokomo is only 20 minutes away, all the best without having to deal with all the bad..

The whole point was, who in Kokomo really cares about who the next Sheriff of Miami County is?
Not who shops at Wal-Mart. I really get tired of folks bad mouthing Kokomo. If our city is so bad, why don't the folks in Pee Roo shop, work and stay in their litte garden spot. I am sure there are jobs -a- plenty and top of the line shopping there. If everyone who works in Kokomo/Howard County and then leaves after work, goes back to other county's and spends their dollars there stayed home, maybe those jobs would be filled by local folks who pay taxes and have pride in their hometown. I do hear there is a great clown school there, in Pee Roo..... if the shoe fits .............

Default Who is bad mouthing Kokomo?

I dont know where this stuff comes from. I was reading this nice thread about the next sheriff in Miami County. Then some one bash's Miami County and Peru then a Peru person points out that Miami County isnt so bad and a nice place to live. Now the dude who attacked Miami County is saying someone is bashing Kokomo, all the while making fun of Peru?? Anyway lets get back on topic, NIK has pointed out many times that he welcomes people from other counties posting here ie Tipton, Cass, Miami Etc....
So yes in looking over Van Baalens background and qualifications he should be a very good sheriff for Miami County. Good luck to all our friends and neighbors to the north. Many of the Miami County people spend a lot of their money here in Kokomo and drive our economy, the last thing we want to do is offend them or mock them. I say thanks...see you all again soon!

If this is not bashing Kokomo than what is it? They have all the "best" without having to deal with "all the bad"..... if this type of person is like minded to this guy, then I think I will donate to whomever is running against him.

If you really think that is bashing, then you don't read this forum much or you are reading and comprehension impaired OR you just want to demonize someone because they disagree with your opinion. My guess would be the third choice. That probably is not too helpful to your choice of candidate.
The average voter is the best argument that our school system is failing.

    Default Not for anyone here

Heck Im not for anyone, just reading current threads and came across this stuff. Where does this guy live that he is so sensitive? He goes on a rant taunting and calling all the Miami County people names then gets in a huff about people from the north wanting to come here to eat and shop??? Grow up and find a new hobby.

    Default Overqualified

Van Baalen is overqualified for the job of sheriff. He has been to the FBI academy and owns several businesses. He has interests in other things as well. He is running for the fun of it. Its just another "let me see if I can do this" challenge to him. He would fast become bored with the job. It never works out to have an overqualified person on the job. Nor does it work out to have someone that is as diversified as Van Baalen. Miami county needs a full time sheriff not one that has to juggle outside businesses and the sheriff job.
I have also spoken to many people in the last few weeks. They are regular citizens. Not officers or frat members. They agree Tim Miller is a much better match for the job. State Troopers make the best sheriff. There must be something to it because a lot of Indiana counties have State Troopers as sheriff. We will see come May 4th.

Default FOP Sure doesnt see it this way

The local FOP and the local police sure dont agree. They say why not vote for the most trained and qualified candiate and watch things run in a smooth way. Only someone that is underqualifed would call someone else over qualified. Kind of like people with no education say education is over rated. Kind of like people that have not been to top police schools say that they are not needed.....Qualifications will win out, people dont want to settle for underqualified candidates anymore.

A sheriff race is just a popularity contest. There are plenty of sheriffs out there that have either too much or not enough experience but won on their popularity.
Actually if neither candidate has been a sheriff how do you explain that one has more experience than another? Attending the FBI academy is a prerequisite for being a sheriff? Owning businesses is a prerequisite for being a sheriff? The FOP and the like can say what candidate they support but that does make up the mind of the voter. Every candidate has the backing of some kind of organization. It doesn't mean that makes them the best candidate.
Voter perception of State Troopers will carry quite far in this primary. It seems to be a perception in a lot of counties. Troopers are seen as professionals. Retired city police chiefs not so much. Retired city police chiefs carry a lot of political baggage. Troopers do not. I know many people will vote Tim Miller for Sheriff. He is the best choice for Miami County.

*By the way attending the FBI academy is something a lot of officers around the country do. There are several different classes the academy offers. The academy brings together nearly 300 law enforcement officers from across the country. The FBI holds four sessions of the academy each year. Its not such a unique thing.

State Troopers receive constant training throughout their career. A city police chief going to the FBI academy once does not give an edge in experience.

Default Qualifications is all we have to go on

Why would any voter on earth ever vote for a less qualified candidate?? Wouldnt that be like going to a job interview and not being hired because you can do to good of a job?? Isnt the election process about finding the person that will do the best job for the voters and tax payers?? This is a whole new spin to politics, lets find the less qualified person and vote for them??? WTF, funny in a way, very sad in another, but comforting to know it isnt main stream thinking. The most qualified and proven person will win this and the other races. See ya on May 5th!!
