    Default Gardening Thread

I miss our old gardening thread on HM. Even though the season is winding down, there's still stuff to do and talk about regarding the garden! I have more Swiss Chard than I know what to do with, it is colorful and adds interest to the garden. If hubby gets laid off again and we are "poor", there are worse things to eat! My purple brussels sprouts look cool, and have lots of sprouts, but not big ones. This was a great year for banana peppers in my garden. I'm going to try to keep lettuce going as long as possible, with cold frames, covers, etc. My plan for summer lettuce didn't work out so good this year, even though I bought heat-tolerant seeds, and used shade. Maybe next year. I'm hoping to harvest more broccoli and cauliflower this fall, but looks iffy, esp. the cauli! Anyone else still gardening? What's going on in your garden?

LoganLoon, there is a couple articles in the blog section written by a local landscape expert (1HappyCamper).

I talked to him a few months ago and he expressed interest in writing some more articles. I know he has been busy, so I will refresh his memory...lol

Well, Logan, we've still got peppers, tho for how long I'm not sure. It's getting close to frosting here the last couple days, and that will finish them for sure. Got 13 watermelons out last weekend before the rain hit them again and they'd split. So far, all have been ripe and very tasty. Still need to dig our potatoes, but weather's not cooperating much. Hopefully we can get them before they begin to rot.

We had a frost advisory the other night, so i covered some of my garden. I didn't see any frost, though. Banana peppers are still trying to produce. Swiss Chard is looking good, the lettuce seeds I planted in my cold frame are coming up. Broccoli and cauli. are growing more in the cool weather. A few tomatoes here and there, but they don't taste as good as the warm-weather ones.
I got the urge to plant non-edible stuff last Sunday, too! I bought a Mammoth Mum, ornamental cabbage, and some pansies. Ordered bulbs online for: crocus, hyacinths, and tulips, something I kept forgetting to do, since my old ones gave up on me awhile back. Pretty plants and flowers make me smile
But now I received another enabling e-mail from a seed company, for winter- interest plants. There's an evergreen plant, a dark purple ornamental grass that keeps it's color all winter, etc. Hmmm...guess I've spent enough for now, maybe next year!

Stoner I will take you up on the garden offer next spring, but I will need a lot of instruction and demonstration on digging, raking, planting, weeding and harvesting. Also, later you could deliver the produce and demonstrate some cooking and kitchen clean up. Thanks for you offer.
