Default Buy "American" cars or good ones...

A GREAT post I just read on Yahoo finance about which used cars to buy..and not buy. Guess which cars ranked the worst? You got it, GM & Chrysler.. imagine.

Sorry Mike, but I knew and also was related to many people that would "put together" various parts for GM cars. They would laugh at parties about how they would just use 1 or 2 screws to hold something together as the assembly line was just moving either too fast or they didn't feel like working that day. One girl even laughed & said that she used bubble gum to hold a part together. Guess what? You should have heard most of them complaining when they were laid off. The ones that were called back suddenly changed their tune. BUT, it isn't only Gm. Ford is in their also. My old leadman's brand new top of the line Ford suddenly started smoking at a red light coming back to work. He lifted the hood. The oxygen was it it needed. It went up in flames. We listened on the other phone as he was talking with the dealer & the dealer kept telling him that it must have been something that "he did." A 3 week old car? He told them "That's ok. You can watch it on the news at 6pm" as a news truck was parked across the street when all of this happened & caught it ALL on tape. Gee, suddenly the owner called him back & they had him a brand new car. The Auto unions have taken what was once a great form of protection for the American Worker and DESTROYED it. They have abused their power and gotten rich over it at the American Citizens expense. I knew of 1 man who rode a bike around the plant changing toilet paper & paper towels. That's all he did. For this he started out at $17/hr. This isn't abusing the power? Start taking away from the unions benefits packages. 1 man I worked with was retired from GM & was upset because his co-pay was going up to $5/visit. Most people don't have coverage or have a $20-40 co-pay. The entire sysytem needs to be fully overhauled. And that includes all of the management with their pay, perks and bonus'.Replies (3)

Please point out a new all American made car. Is there such a beast?

Doesn't anyone realize planed obsolescence keeps jobs? Plus it works world wide. The sooner it wears out the better.

I work on a Gm assembly, and I have never built something I wouldn't wanna buy myself. I take pride in my job. We build 72 trucks a hr. Now not all jobs are hard, but some are. I busted my ass for 11 before getting into a better area. I worked at a job before getting hired at Gm that I thought was hard. Some of these jobs are rough on the body. I have pain everyday, but i'm not complaining cause i'm being paid to do a job. There are a few people who take advantage of being in the union. I don't with agree with them, and I make my feeling known. If they don't wanna work, quit and let someone else have there job!! Don't forget to mention the 10 million vehicles Toyota has recalled cause of defects!

I'm guessing you're at FWA, and I will agree with you the jobs can be tough and the build-rate brutal.

You folks do build some fine trucks. Thanks!

Knocking Toyota does not help your cause, though. FWA is in a completely different market (IMO) than Toyota here. GM trucks are not in the same class as some imitators.

Keep building ..... it is appreciated.

While I am driving presently a GMC truck (most of my life have driven GM products) and a Honda CRV, I agree. No reason to bash GM vehicles, they are a quality product manufactured by quality employees.

The reason I purchased the CRV (traded in a Buick Rendezvous) is that when I purchased it, GM did not have a corresponding vehicle (wanted a crossover like the CRV) of that size in the 4 wheel drive category, because I purchased it the year that they quit making the 4 wheel drive Vibe. (I know, they made it again the next year)

I am not bashing Honda ( a great vehicle), however, most likely my next trade will go back to the GM family. No one should bash your friends and neighbors who make these GM cars, however when they don't have actually what you want, then one should not feel badly or be criticized for purchasing what you want.

You are a jealous UAW wannabe that wished you had went to work at a GM plant like your relatives!Let see YOU get your A$$ up at 4:30 in the morning(every morning in the good years) for 20-40 years and build cars.

I have two GM vehicles that i bought from new right now a 91 and 01 and both have over 110,000 miles on them with NO major repairs need. Brakes tires batteries bulbs and belts that's all. Best vehicles i have ever owned.......

Any factory in America during those "boom years" had to deal with relatives like yours as employees. Most places could fire them at will but GM could'nt.

Probably a good thing for GM(and US) you did'nt follow their footsteps. You'd probably be sitting around the family reunions telling the same stories.

My advice is to get off the UAW rah-rah stuff. The UAW isn't what builds great cars and trucks... people do.

The Auto union clan needs to come to the realization... in the age of global economics, of automation, of modern workplace safety... that their union is worthless to them.

I'm not trying to be mean... I'm merely stating fact. Your pensions will not hold, the healthcare will be cut, and young hires won't make what you once did.

There is no jealousy about it. When the US automakers commanded most of the market... when vehicles didn't last as long and it was common to sell 15 million plus cars-and-trucks in the USA... you folks took advantage of that.

The advantage is now gone and you have to compete.

It's not a bad thing. You just have to be an American and be better than everyone else.

In this thread, I replied to someone who is probably working at the GM Fort Wayne Assembly Center... GM's hallmark plant for quality, productivity, and innovative thinking. They build quality trucks up there... but it's not because of the UAW.. it's because of the people.
