I use to eat crawdads out of the creek and small minnows. The minnows tastes like smelt. The crawdad tails a little like shrimp. I ate cattail root too. Its nothing more than a small potato. There are a lot of goodies out in the sticks....ya just gotta know what's good and what's not. Boiled young lambsquarter weed is good too. Dandelion greens and the flower is good. Actually I've ate just about anything that has flown, walked, crawled, or swam. Its all good.
We haven't change much since our primal ancestors. We've become slaves to our technology.....and the grocery store.

i've never eaten minnows or some of that stuff. I have eaten crawdads a few times, especially in LA. Used to get to go crabbin' and trawling for shrimp there, too. One time somebody gave us a bunch of fresh oysters, and i breaded them and fried them in butter. They were so good, but i ended with a huge bellyache!

Thinking about planting some carrots and stuff as soon as it cools off. What is kale like? Anyone grow it?

I tried kale once, didn't care for it, very strong taste. Hubby mowed everything that's not producing anymore or the bugs have ruined. Dad said the last mustard greens we gave him were not good at all. He said they'd gotten tough because of all the heat, so it's gone too. My young broccoli was too badly damaged by bugs to save it too. All this rain we've been getting is making damage control on the bugs impossible.
Tried the salsa's, they're awesome, tho we like the hot better than the medium, so when I can Tuesday, will be adding jalepenos to the mix to heat it up. Lord knows, I have more than enough jalepenos, lol.
Green beans should be coming off Tuesday for the first time and will can them Wednesday. First picking wasn't very big, but then hubby planted twice so some haven't gotten quite to the picking stage either. Let my father in law have the first one. Without him, we wouldn't have that rear tine tiller, so he's always gotten the first of everything in thanks. He said the beans were wonderful. Hope he's up to a bean stringing party on the porch, lol.

For some really hot peppers grow the Bhut Jolokia peppers. Most people call them ghost peppers. On the Scoville heat scale they are over 1 million. Habaneros are 300,000. Jalapenos are 3,000–6,000.

You will be screaming like a little girl if you eat a ghost pepper. lol

Twenty six more pints of hot salsa done yesterday. I don't want to even look at the tomatoes today.

Well, the garden's almost done. Still have peppers, beans, and some tomatoes. Think I'm going to give all the tomatoes away that we can't eat ourselves as we pick them until next week and then they should be done as well. Nites are getting much cooler, tho we're heading back into another hot spell they say next week. But the last three days have had a fall feel to them. I'm just hoping we can get a big picking off the beans at least twice to put up for winter.
Hubby's finally agreed we need to downsize the garden next year. He's realized we can't feed the world, lol. Tho, bless his heart he's certainly helped several out this year with our excess. My mail carriers love us and I know they'll be asking in spring if we're going to plant again. We've been able to help a couple that's gardens haven't done well, to give them some to put up for winter, and probably the last picking will go to the church's food bank. They'll can it for those that need it in the winter. But, next year I'm going to have my backyard back again.
It's been a good summer for us all in all. Hope everyone else's has been too.

    Default The cucumber

WOW WHAT A LITTLE GEM THE CUCUMBER IS. Who knew?

    1. Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.

    2. Feeling tired in the afternoon, put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.

    3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.

    4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.

    5. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!!

    6. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explores for quick meals to thwart off starvation.

    7. Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don't have enough time to polish your shoes? Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.

    8. Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge? Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and voila, the squeak is gone!

    9. Stressed out and don't have time for massage, facial or visit to the spa? Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber with react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown the reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams.

    10. Just finish a business lunch and realize you don't have gum or mints? Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath, the phytochemcials will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.

    11. Looking for a 'green' way to clean your faucets, sinks or stainless steel? Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean, not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but is won't leave streaks and won't harm you fingers or fingernails while you clean.

    12. Using a pen and made a mistake? Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing, also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!!
